There is always a Reason
The body communicates with us in its own way and the easiest signal for us to understand is usually pain. It tells us that something is not right, that our body needs our help in some way. It does not hurt for no reason, there´s no coincidental origin of discomfort......
Everytime some part of our body is in pain of some sort, there´s a perfect, logical reason for that signal - if we know and unerstand it, or not.
Following the laws of logic this means there must be other, earlier signals for us to react upon before the body needs to use pain to get our attention and it should be considered a priority for every human being to make noticing and understanding these subtler signal an outstanding priority in our lifes. To learn how to detect the approach of an overuse situation long before it calls for pain and discomfort.
Sometimes the reason might seem obvious (ie bad ergonomics at work or the wrong kind of exercise), sometimes it´s less obvious (stress, unconscious patterns of thought and movement etc.) and mostly there´s not one single reason to be found but rather a combination of many different stresses, both physical, mental end emotional, over a prolonged period of time.
In most cases it´s not possible to isolate the entire reason behind the problem or there are things involved that cannot be dealt with and we are left with finding a way to strengten the body and increase its capability to cope with the situation in better ways.
This might include training, relaxation and other actions You can tale by Yourself and often it boils down to th einsight that everyone needs helpå every now and then (just as Your car is in need of maintanance) and that there´s no need to wait for pain or discomfort to occur before You let Yourself in for a treatment.
Over the course of the years I´ve given plenty of treatments to customers who were not in pain - though, to my knowledge at least, never treated anyone who didn´t needed a treatment!
Philosophy
What can I do for You?
This is the central question for me at our first meeting. Every person has different needs and wishes and its of major importance for me to find out about the customers own goals for the visit.
Most people initially visit me to get help from an acute or chronical problem of the back, neck or other parts of the body.
Some are happy as soon as the initial problem is solved and others want further help to prevent future problems and increase their level of well being as well as their tolerance for stress on the body structure.
My focus is always one of recreating body balance and to help the body function without unnessesary tension by working towards proper postural alignment.
To make this possible every session starts with bodyreading and/or biomechanical/kinesiological examination to identify tension and imbalances and to understand the reasons behind the problem.
Thereafter we use mainly deep tissue massage techniques (myofascial techniques) to release tension and stretch shortened muscle- and connective tissue as well as adjustment techniques for spine and extremities to normalise joint mobility and reduce soft tissue stress.
I need to know Your goals and hopes for the treatments and what You would like me to do for You.
Even if most patients initially only want to get rid of some problem or discomfort I always work to inspire them to return for more preventive purposes.
In my way of thinking it´s time for the next treatment when You start feeling stiffer or less flexible than You would like to.
In other words I´d like You to listen to Your body and to learn to understand it´s signals to make it possible for us to break a negative pattern before it turns into a major problem with acute pain or discomfort.
Treatment
The first time You visit my office it´s usually because You experience some problem, pain or discomfort and got referred by a friend or aquaintance, who is already a satisfied customer.
At this occation we´ll normally focus on the problem area to ease the immediate discomfort. This might be an acute situation like torticollis, low back pain, a overuse or sportsinjury. On the other hand You might need my help to take care of some tightend up leg muscles prior to an important race.
If possible I´d like to scedule at least one more appoinment to follow up the results of our first meeting. At that point the situation is often less acute and we can start working towards prevention of future problems.
Usually this is also a good time to introduce some home exercises.
It´s of great importance to me that You experience quick results of the treatments and to increase Your level of understanding when it comes to origin an background of the problem. In particular this i sof major importance to prevent future discomfort and in most cases a working modell of injury prevention can be found.
I´m known to be "ruthlessly result orientated" and parts of the treatment can be percieved as being painful, especially the connective tissue around and between the muscles does often hurt when being worked at and is is of outmost importance that You are very straight forward on how it feels.
The best results are achieved when we work right att the border line of what You can take and never go past that line. Anyhow You might experiance some reactions on the days following the treatment, this is normal and npt to be worried about!
